Timely Information

Smartphones and smartwatches excel at providing timely information. Apps send push notifications for updates. Reminders keep people on schedule. Weather apps provide forecasts based on current data. Drop detection instantly calls medical aid during emergencies.

There is a reason why timely information often rely on data collection, especially sensors, rather than algorithmic prediction. Generic chaos is not computationally predictable in the long run, but can be approximated with live data in the short run. Since everyday life is filled with chaotic events, data collection provide superior ability for smartphones and smartwatches with just right ergonomics to offer timely information.

Maps apps are great examples. Store hours, contact information, and travel routes, etc. help users navigate the world. Data are massively collected and updated to keep information relevant. Beyond current success, however, it's conceivable that more types of live data can greatly improve usability. Roads under construction can be labeled for safety. Stores can take advantage of official accounts in services like Google My Business for marketing campaigns and urgent announcements. Events can be easily browsed in space-time view for planning.

Social networks keep users connected with up-to-date posts. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, governments extensively used various social networks to communicate public health policies. The importance and timeliness of these posts are justifications why social networks like Facebook should bring back timeline view to ensure the information is comprehensive and current, without algorithmic filters.

Governments should also build apps to provide citizens with live policy updates for democracy and accountability. Web sites are good, but capabilities like push notifications are limited. If Apple continues to deprecate web app platform, native apps are, unfortunately, the way to go if governments want to serve people in a genuinely timely fashion.

It's expected that smartphone and smartwatch uses can be further enhanced with judicious addition of more types of timely information.
